How to Repurpose Your Old Reusable Water Bottle

As an eco-conscious consumer, we know you prefer to keep your existing items for as long as possible before buying something new. But as a health-conscious individual, you also understand that using certain products daily — like reusable water bottles with plastic components — can release chemicals and microplastics, which may be harmful to both you and the planet.

So, if you’re looking to switch to a 100% plastic-free water bottle but don’t want your current one ending up in landfill, don’t worry. We’ve created an easy guide to help you repurpose your old bottles while making the move to a safer way to sip!

Flower vase

Whether your old water bottle is made of glass, plastic, or painted steel, it can make an excellent vase for holding bouquets! To keep flowers fresh, simply rinse the bottle with cool water every so often when the blooms dry out. Since you're not using it for food or drink, you won’t need to wash it as frequently or with hot soapy water — helping to reduce the release of any chemicals or microplastics.

Watering can

Prefer to keep your plants in the soil? Old water bottles make great alternatives to traditional watering cans! Just fill the bottle and water your houseplants with ease. As you won’t be drinking from it, occasional cleaning is all that’s needed — keeping its environmental impact to a minimum.

Ice pack

Looking to keep something cool? Rather than buying a plastic ice pack, try repurposing your old plastic water bottles instead. You can also freeze uninsulated stainless steel bottles — just make sure not to fill them completely to allow room for expansion as the liquid freezes. Once frozen, simply pop the bottle into a lunch bag or picnic basket — and you’re good to go!

Rolling pin

For avid bakers, stainless steel water bottles can work brilliantly as a rolling pin! Simply roll your hands over the top instead of holding handles on the sides. However, as many bottles are painted, we recommend placing a piece of eco-friendly wrap between the bottle and your dough to prevent any paint from flaking into your food.

Water bottles are excellent at keeping liquids in – but they’re also great at keeping them out. That means you can use your old bottle to store items like plasters, keys, money, sunscreen, cards, or lip balm whenever you're on the go! This handy trick can be a lifesaver when travelling, camping, or spending a day at the beach.

Piggy bank

One of our favourite ways to give your old water bottle a second life — without harming your health or the planet — is to use it as a piggy bank! Keep it at home and fill it with coins you collect along the way as a reminder of your commitment to protecting the earth. Even better, once the coins reach the top, donate them to conservation efforts!
